Verse 71

निष्क्रम्य शिक्षया तस्यास्त्रपा-वन्तो रसा-तलात् । ज्ञात्वा मासुमतिक्रान्तं व्यथामवललम्बिरे ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having walked out of the nether world as per her instructions they took fright and were full of shame, realising that the month (during which they had to find out Sita) had passed.

Verse 72

चिन्ता-वन्तः कथां चक्रुरुपधा-भेद-भीरवः । "अ-कृत्वा नृ-पतेः कार्यं पूजां लप्स्यामहे कथम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Afraid on account of the breach of faith (and) full of anxiety, they held discussion, ‘‘How shall we receive honour, without accomplishing the work of the king ?"

Verse 73

प्रायोपासनया शान्तिं मन्वानो वालि-संभवः । युक्त्वा योगं स्थितः शैले विवृण्वंश्चित्त-वेदनाम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Setting his mind (intent) upon (mental) peace through fast unto death and revealing (his) mental agony, (Aigada) the son of Vali, sat on the mountain, resorting to yoga.

Verse 74

प्रस्कन्दिकामिव प्राप्तो ध्यात्वा ब्रूते स्म जाम्बवान् । "धिक्शालभञ्जिका-प्रख्यान्विशयान्कल्पना-रुचीन् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: After having reflected, Jambavan who had, as if he had contracted diarrhea, said , "Fie upon the objects of the senses whose charm is imaginary and which are comparable (only) to dolls (i.e., unreal) .

Verse 75

यां कारिं राज-पुत्रोऽयमनुतिष्ठति तां क्रियाम् ।अहमप्यनुतिष्ठामि" सोऽप्युक्त्वैवमुपाविशत् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: "I too (shall) perform the same rite which this Prince (Aigada) performs." Having so declared, he too abstained from food.

Verse 76

उवाच मारुतिर्वृद्धे संन्यासिन्यत्र वानरात् । "अहं पर्यायसंप्राप्तां कुर्वे प्रायोपवेशिकाम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Maruti said to the monkeys, "When the old (Jambavan) is renouncing (food), I (too) shall observe fast unto death that has come to my turn. "

Verse 77

अ-भावे भवतां योऽस्मिन्जीवेत्तस्याऽस्त्व-जीवनिः" ।इत्युक्त्वा सर्व एवाऽस्थुर्बद्ध्वा योगाऽऽसनानि ते ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then all the other monkeys also sat down in yogic postures after declaring, May lifelessness come to him who may live here, in your absence."

Verse 78

अ-क्लेश्यमसिनाऽग्न्यन्तं कबन्ध-वधमभ्यधुः । धिङ्नः प्रपतनं घोरं क्लेदाऽन्तत्वम-नाथ-वत् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: They remarked , Painless (was) the slaughter with a sword of (even) Kabandha, by the side of the Fire. Fie upon (this) horrifying fall of ours, the Fate of ending in damp decay like one without a protector !'

Verse 79

ततो मन्द-गतः पक्षी तेषां प्रायोपवेशनम् ।अशनीयमिवाशंसुर्महानायाद-शोभनः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then a slow-movingugly, huge bird (Sampati ) came down , expecting as it were, their fast unto death to (provide it) food.

Verse 80

देह-व्रश्चन-तुण्डाऽग्रं तं विलोक्याऽशुभाऽऽकरम् । पाप-गोचरमात्मानमशोचन्वानरा मुहुः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: On seeing him, a mine of evil, with the tip of its beak capable of shearing (their) bodies, the monkeys bewailed them selves over and again that they had fallen within the range of evil.
