Verse 1

ततः कर्ता वनाऽऽकम्पं ववौ वर्षा-प्रभञ्जनः । नभः पूरयितारश्च समुन्नेमुः पयो-धराः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then producing a strong tremour in the woods, the stormy rain-wind blew ; and clouds rose high, pervading the sky.

Verse 2

तर्पणं प्रजनिष्णूनां षस्यानाम-मलं पयः । रोचिष्णवः स-विस्फूर्जा मुमुचुर्भिन्न-वद्घनाः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: As though torn asunder, the highly shining clouds accompanied by thunder, let down clear water, good for satiating the speedily growing produce ,

Verse 3

निराकरिष्णवो भानुं दिवं वर्तिष्णवोऽभितः ।अलंकरिष्णवो भान्तस्तडित्वन्तश्चरिष्णवः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: -(the clouds) that were in the habit of subduing the sun. moving about both the sides of the sky, and embellishing and shining.

Verse 4

तान्विलोक्याऽसहिष्णुः सन्विललान्पोन्मदिष्णु-वत् । वसन्माल्यवति ग्लास्नू रामो जिष्णुर-धृष्णु-वत् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: On seeing them, the habitually triumphant Rama, residing on the Malyavat (mountain), unable to endure (separation), and unable to pick up courage, becoming depressed,lamented like one highly intoxicated.

Verse 5

"भ्रमी कदम्ब-संभिन्नः पवनः शमिनामपि । क्लमि-त्वं कुरुतेऽत्यर्थं मेघ-शीकर-शीतलः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: The whirling wind, mingled with (the fragrance of) kadamba (flowers), and cool with the spray from the clouds causes excessive depression even to the self-controlled.

Verse 6

संज्वारिणेव मनसा ध्वान्तमायासिना मया । द्रोहि खद्योत-संपर्कि नयनाऽमोषि दुःसहम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: (This) harmful darkness teeming with glow-worms and robbing the eyes (of visibility), is hard to be borne by the mind by me feeling fatigued, as if feverish.

Verse 7

कुर्वन्ति परिसारिण्यो विद्युतः परिदेविनम् ।अभ्याघातिभिरामिश्राश्चातकैः परिराटिभिः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘Prone to spread around and interspersed with cataka (birds) given to producing a drum-beat-like sound and chattering(these) lightning flashes make me a lamenter.

Verse 8

संसर्गी परिदाहीव शीतोऽप्याभाति शीकरः । सोढुमाक्रीडिनोऽशक्याः शिखिनः परिवादिनः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: The spray, though cool, appears to be scorching all over (when) it touches (me; insufferable are the playful peacocks given to clamouring.

Verse 9

एता देवानुरोधिन्यो द्वेषिण्य इव रागिणम् । पीडयन्ति जनं धाराः पतन्त्योऽनपकारिणम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: These falling showers, complying with Fate, torture the harmless lovers, as if full of hatred.

Verse 10

कूर्याद्योगिनमप्येष स्फूर्जा-वान्परिमोहिनम् । त्यागिनं सुख-दुःखस्य परिक्षेप्यम्भसामृतुः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘‘Accompanied by thunder and scattering water all around, this season would render even a yogin (who controls his mind), who is a habitual forsaker of pleasure and pain, prone to be allured.
