Verse 31

सम्पत्य तत्-सनीडे-सौ तं वृत्तान्तमषिष्रवत् । त्रस्नुनाऽथ श्रुताऽर्थेन तेनाऽगादि दशाऽऽननः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Descending by his Marica's) side, he (Ravana) made him listen to that happening (of the discomfiture of Surpanakha). Then Ravana was addressed thus by him who had heard the account and was feeling frightened :

Verse 32

"अन्तर्धत्स्व रघु-व्याघ्रात्तस्मात्त्वं राक्षसेश्वर ! । यो रण्ने दुरुपस्थानो हस्त-रोधं दधद्धनुः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘Hide, Oh lord of demons, from that tiger of Raghus who, wielding a bow held lightly in (his) hand, is difficult to be faced on the battlefield.

Verse 33

भवन्तं कार्तवीर्यो यो हीन-सन्धिमचीकरत् । जिगाय तस्य हन्तारं स रामः सार्वलौकिकम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘‘That Rama vanquished the world-famous killer of the name Kartavirya who compelled you to make servile peace (with him).

Verse 34

यमाऽऽस्य-दृश्वरी तस्य ताडका वेत्ति विक्रमम्। । शूरं-मन्यो रणाच्चाऽहं निरस्तः सिंह-नर्दिना ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: "Tadaka who saw the face of Yama knows his valour ; and I, Vainly regarding myself brave, was banished from the battlefield by him who roars like a lion.

Verse 35

न त्वं तेनाऽन्वभाविष्ठा नाऽन्वभावि त्वयाऽप्यसौ ।अनुभूतो मया चाऽसौ तेन चाऽन्वभविष्यहम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: You have not been tested by him, nor has he been tested by you, too; but he has been experienced by me and I have been experienced by him.

Verse 36

अध्यङ्शस्त्र-भृतां रामो न्यञ्चस्तं प्राप्य मद्-विधाः । स कन्या-शुल्कमभनङ्मिथिलायां मखे धनुः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Rama is the supermost of weapon-bearers ; having confronted him, (persons) such as I, are the lowliest. As the dowry for the bride he broke the bow in the sacrifice at Mithila.

Verse 37

सं-वित्तः सह-युध्वानौ तच्-छक्तिं खर-दूषणौ । यज्वानश्च स-सुत्वानो यानगोपीन्मखेषु सः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘Khara and Dusana who fought with him and the sacrificers along with the offerers of soma libation, know his might well.

Verse 38

सुख-जातः सुरा-पीतो नृ-जग्धो माल्य-धारयः ।अधि-लङ्कं स्त्रियो दीव्य माऽऽरब्धा बलि-विग्रहम्।" ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘(Oh you) who has experienced pleasure, drunk wine, devoured human beings and worn chaplets, gambled with women in Lanka ! please do not commence hostility with the mighty.

Verse 39

तंभीतं-कारमाक्रुश्य रावणः प्रत्यभाषत । "यात-यामं विजितवान्स रामं यदि किं ततः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having shouted at him , calling (him) a coward, Ravana replied, "If the defeated Parakurama who was aged, so what ?

Verse 40

अघानि ताडका तेन लज्जा-भय-विभूषणा । स्त्री-जने यदि तच्छ्लाघ्यं धिग्लोकं क्षुद्र-मानसम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: To Tadaka bashfulness and timidity were ornaments; if that (shooting of the arrow) upon womenfolk were commendaable, (then) fie upon the mean-minded people (who perpetrated that crime).
