Verse 41

यद्गेहे-नर्दिनमसौ शरैर्भीरुमभाययत् । कु-ब्रह्म-यज्ञ-के रामो भवन्तं पौरुषं न तत् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: It is no manliness that in the contemptible sacrifice of the wretched brahmin (Visvamitra) that Rama with (his) arrows frightened you, a coward who roars only in his) house.

Verse 42

चिर-कालोषितं जीर्णं कीट-निष्कुषितं धनुः । किं चित्रं यदि रामेण भग्नं क्षत्रिय-काऽन्तिके ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: “What is there to be surprised if the bow lying there for long, worn out and eaten by insects, was broken by Rama in the presence of pitiable warriors.

Verse 43

वन-तापस-के वीरौ विपक्षे गलिताऽऽदरौ । किं चित्रं यदि साऽवज्ञौ मम्रतुः खर-दूषणौ ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: What (is there) to wonder, if the two warriors (Khara and Dusana) who had lost (allconcern and were full of contempt for (their) adversary, the worthless forester ascetic, died ?

Verse 44

त्वं च भीरुः सु-दुर्बुद्धे ! नित्यं शरण-काम्यसि । गुणांश्चाऽपह्नुषेऽस्माकं स्तौषि शत्रूंश्च नः सदा ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: ‘‘But you, whose intent is extremely evil, are a coward that seeks shelter for ever ; and (you) always deny my merits and praise my enemies

Verse 45

शीर्षच्-छेद्यमतोऽहं त्वा करोमि क्षिति-वर्धनम् । कारयिष्यामि वा कृत्यं विजिघृक्षुर्वनौकसौ ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Hence I shall turn you, who deserve to be beheaded, into a corpse; or else, desirous of punishing those two forest dwellers, I shall force you to do what must be done.'"

Verse 46

तमुद्यत-निषाताऽसिं प्रत्युवाच जिजीविषुः । मारीचोऽनुनयंस्त्रासाद् "अभ्यमित्र्यो भवामि ते ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: To him who had lifted his sharp sword, Marica, desirous of remaining alive and entreating (him) on account of fear, replied, I shall be confronting your enemy.

Verse 47

हरामि राम-सौमित्री मृगो भूत्वा मृग-द्युवौ ।उद्योगमभ्यमित्रीणो यथेष्टं त्वं च सं-तनु।" ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having become a deer, I shall allure away Rama and Laksmana who are addicted to hunting; and confronting the enemy you accomplish the task as per your desire.'

Verse 48

ततश्चित्रीयमाणोऽसौ हेम-रत्न-मयो मृगः । यथामुखीनः सीतायाः पुप्लुवे बहु लोभयन् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then that astonishing deer of gold and jewels leapt in front of Sita, fascinating (her) greatly.

Verse 49

तेनाऽदुद्यूषयद्रामं मृगेण मृग-लोचना । मैथिली विपुलोरस्कं प्रावुवूर्षुर्मृगाऽजिनम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Desirous of wearing the deer-skin, the Mithila Princess, who had deer-like eyes, forced the broad-chested Rama to hunt that deer.

Verse 50

योग-क्षेम-करं कृत्वा सीताया लक्ष्मणं ततः । मृगस्याऽनुपदी रामो जगाम गज-विक्रमः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then having put Laksmana in charge of the main tenance and security of Sita, Rama, whose gait was like that of an elephant, departed following the footsteps (heels) (of the deer).
