Verse 31

यथा-स्वं संगिरन्ते स्म गोष्ठीषु स्वामिनो गुणान् । पान-शौण्डाः पथः क्षीबा वृन्दैरुदचरन्त च ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: They pronounced in assemblies the qualities of the master, as though (they were) their own and, addicted to drinking and being intoxicated, they crossed the roads and moved away.

Verse 32

यानैः समचरन्ताऽन्ये कुञ्जराऽश्व-रथाऽऽदिभिः । संप्रायच्छन्त बन्दीभिरन्ये पुष्प-फलं शुभम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Others moved about by means of conveyances like elephants, horses, chariots and others; some others offered lovely flowers and fruits to captive women.

Verse 33

कोपात्काश्चित्प्रियैः प्रत्तमुपायंसत नाऽऽसवम् । प्रेम जिज्ञासमानाभ्यस्ताभ्योऽऽशप्सत कामिनः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: On account of anger, some women did not accept the wine offered by (their) lovers. Uorious lovers were cursed by those (women) who were curious to know (test) their love.

Verse 34

प्रादिदृक्षत नो नृत्यं नाऽशुश्रूषत गायनान् । रामं सुस्मूर्षमाणोऽसौ कपिर्विरह-दुःखितम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Intent upon remembering Rama who was grieved by separation, that monkey neither wished to see the dance nor intended to listen to the singers

Verse 35

अनुजिज्ञासतेवाऽथ लङ्का-दर्षनमिन्दुना । तमोऽपहविमुक्तांऽशु पूर्वस्यां दिश्युदैयत ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Now, the moon, as if desirous of permitting the inspection (sight) of Lanka, made an appearance in the eastern direction, so as to scatter its darkness-dispelling rays (everywhere).

Verse 36

आशुश्रूषन्स मैथिल्या वार्तां हर्म्येषु रक्षसाम् । शीयमानऽन्धकारेषु समचारीद-शङ्कितः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Desirous to hear an account of Sita, he moved about undaunted in the demons' palaces wherefrom darkness was vanishing.

Verse 37

शत-साहस्रमारक्षं मध्यगं रक्षसां कपिः । ददर्श यं कृतान्तोऽपि म्रियेताऽऽसाद्य भीषणम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: The monkey saw a hundred-thousand (strong) guards-unit, situated at the centre, on confronting which even Yama would have died.

Verse 38

अध्यासिसिषमाणेऽथ वियन्-मध्यं निशा-करे । कासांचक्रे पुरी सौघैरतीवोद्भासिभिः सितैः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Now, on account of the moon being about to occupy the centre of the sky, the white and extremely radiant (whitewashed) palaces of the city began to shine (brightly).

Verse 39

इन्दुं चषक-संक्रान्तमुपायुङ्क्त यथाऽमृतम् । पयुञ्जानः प्रिया वाचः समाजाऽनुरतो जनः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Employing affable words, the people, fully engrossed in the drinking parties, enjoyed, like nectar, the moon that was reflected in the goblets.

Verse 40

संक्ष्णुवान इवोत्कण्ठामुपाभुङ्क्त सुरामलम् । ज्योत्स्नायां विगलन्-मानस्तरुणो रक्षसां गणः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: As though sharpening their longing, youthful groups of demons whose pride was slipping away, consumed enough (ample) wine in the moonlight.
