Verse 71

डुढौकिरे पुनर्लङ्कां बुबुधे तान्दशाननः । जीवतश्च विवेदाऽरीन्बभ्रंशेऽसौ धृतेस्ततः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: They again invaded Lanka ; Ravana recognised them and realised that the enemies were alive ; thereupon he swerved from his fortitude.

Verse 72

सस्रंसे शर-बन्धेन दिव्येनेति बुबुन्द सः । बभाजाऽथ परं मोहमूहांचक्रे जयं न च ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: He heard that the divine bonds of the arrows had slipped off; he then took to extreme delusion and did not expect victory.

Verse 73

घूम्राक्षोऽथ प्रतिष्ठासांचक्रे रावण-संमतः । सिंहाऽऽस्यैर्युयुजे तस्य वृकाऽऽस्यैश्च रथः खगैः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Thereafter, permitted by Ravana, Dhumraksa intended to march out ; his chariot was yoked with beasts fying in the sky which had mouths of lions or foxes.

Verse 74

त्वक्-त्रैः संविव्ययुर्देहान्वाहनान्यधिशिश्यिरे ।आनर्जुर्नृ-भुजोऽस्त्राणि ववञ्चुश्चाऽऽहव-क्षितिम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: The cannibals covered (their) bodies with armour, ascended vehicles, picked up missiles and proceeded to the battle-field.

Verse 75

अध्युवास रथं तेये पुराच्चुक्षाव चाऽशुभम् । संश्रावयांचकाराऽऽख्यां धूम्राक्षस्तत्वरे तथा ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Dhumraksa ascended (his) chariot, went out of the city and sneezed inauspiciously; he also announced his name and made haste.

Verse 76

निलिल्ये मूर्ध्नि गृध्रोऽस्य क्रूरा ध्वाङ्क्षा विवाशिरे । शिशीके शोणितं व्योम चचाल क्ष्मा-तलं तथा ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: A Vulture settled down on his head; evil crows crowed; the sky sprinkled blood; also the surface of the earth quaked.

Verse 77

ततः प्रजघटे युद्धं शस्त्राण्यासुः परस्परम् । वव्रश्चुराजुघूर्णुश्च स्येमुश्चुकूर्दिरे तथा ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Then the battle started; (they) hurled missiles mutually; they pierced, revolved, shouted and sported.

Verse 78

रुरुजुर्भ्रेजिरे फेणुर्बहुधा हरि-राक्षसाः । वीरा न बिभयांचक्रुर्भीषयांचक्रिरे परान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: The monkeys and the demons smashed, shone and moved variously; the warriors did not fear ; (they) frightened the enemies.

Verse 79

रत्तं प्रचुश्चुतुः क्षण्णाः शिश्वियुर्बाण-विक्षताः ।अस्यतां शुशुवुर्बाणान्भुजाः साऽङ्गुष्ठ-मुष्टयः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Injured, they oozed out blood (and) got swollen ; the arms of those who hurled arrows disappeared along with the fingers and fists.

Verse 80

रणे चिक्रीड धूम्राक्षस्तं ततर्जाऽनिलाऽऽत्मजः ।आददे च शिलां साऽश्वं पिपेषाऽस्य रथं तया ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Dhumraksa sported in the battle; the son of the Wind (Hanuman) condemned him ; and he picked up a rock and with it smashed his chariot, along with the horses.
