भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 11

अरासिषुश्च्युतोत्साहा भिन्न-देहाः प्रियाऽसवः । कपेरत्रासिषुर्नादान्मृगाः सिंह-ध्वनेरिव ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: They whose enthusiasm was gone, whose bodies were battered and to whom lives were dear, were frightened by the monkey's roars just as the deer (are frightened) by the lion's roars.

Verse 12

मायानामीश्वरास्तेऽपि शस्त्र-हस्ता रथैः कपिम् । प्रत्याववृतिरे हन्तुं हन्तव्या मारुतेः पुनः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Masters of trickery they too, (with) weapons in (their) hands, returned in chariots to kill the monkey (but only) to be struck (down) by Maruti.

Verse 13

तांश्चेतव्यान्क्षितौ श्रित्वा वानरस्तोरणं युतान् । जघानाऽऽधूय परिघं विजिघृक्षून्समागतान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having taken (his) stand on the outer porch, the monkey smote, by whirling the iron club, at those who had united together and come in a group, desirous of fighting and who deserved to be laid down in a heap on the ground.

Verse 14

संजुघुक्षव आयूंषि ततः प्रतिरुरूषवः । रावणाऽन्तिकमाजग्मुर्हत-शेषा निशा-चराः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Thereafter, desirous of saving their lives and intent upon reporting (what had happened), the demons that remained behind those slain, arrived near Ravana,

Verse 15

"एकेन बहवः शूराः साऽऽविष्काराः प्रमत्त-वत् । वैमुख्यं चकृमे" त्युच्चैरूचुर्दश-मुखाऽन्तिके ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: (So) many of us, brave (and) full of pride, were forced to turn back like highly intoxicated (ones) by a single (monkey). Thus they spoke aloud in Ravana's presence.

Verse 16

मांसोपभोग-संशूनानुद्विग्नांस्तानवेत्य सः ।उद्वृत्ता-नयनो मित्रान्मन्त्रिणः स्वान्व्यसर्जयत् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: On realising that those demons , stout by the consumption of flesh, were frightened, he (Ravana), whose eyes were raised up, despatched his own stout ministers.

Verse 17

प्रमेदिताः स-पुत्रास्ते सु-स्वान्ता बाढ-विक्रमाः ।अ-म्लिष्ट-नादा निरगुः फाण्टचित्राऽस्त्र-पाणयः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Very much fattened, accompanied by (their) sons, noble-minded, extremely heroic, they whose voice was clear and who had in (their) hands missiles coated with multi coloured dyes, set out (for battle).

Verse 18

तान्दृष्ट्वाऽतिदृढान्धृष्टान्प्राप्तान्परिवृढाऽऽज्ञया । कष्टं विनर्दतः क्रूरान्शस्त्र-घुष्ट-करान्कपिः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: On seeing the very strong, adventurous, cruel, vigorously shouting ministers who had come on the command of (their) Lord and whose hands made a noise with the weapons, the monkey,

Verse 19

अ-व्यर्णो गिरि-कूटाभानभ्यर्णानार्दिदद्द्रुतम् । वृत्त-शस्त्रान्महाऽरम्भ्यान्-दान्तांस्त्रिदशैरपि ॥

Metre: उपगीति

Karandikar: -(remaining) untroubled, quickly killed them who resembled mountain summits, who were not far away, who had studied (the science of) weapons, whose undertakings were mighty and who could not be subdued even by the gods.

Verse 20

दमिताऽरिः प्रशान्तौजा नादाऽऽपूरित-दिङ्मुखः । जघान रुषितो रुष्टांस्त्वरितस्तूर्णमागतान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: He who had restrained his enemies and quenched their lustre filled the openings of the quarters with (his) thunder, got enraged, made haste and killed them who were angry and had arrived hurriedly.
