भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 11

तं रत्न-दायं जित-मृत्यु-लोका रात्रिं-चराः कान्ति-भृतोऽन्वसर्पन् । प्रमुक्त-मुक्ता-फलमम्बु-वाहं संजात-तृष्णा इव देव-मुख्याः ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: The demons, who had conquered the mortal world who were bearing lustre and in whom a thirst (for jewels) has arisen, approached him, the distributor of gems, just as the chiefs of gods that have conquered the world of death and in whom thirst is aroused at the approach of the cloud which showers pearls.

Verse 12

स किङ्करैः कल्पितमिङ्गित-ज्ञैः संबाधकं पूर्व-समागतानाम् । सिंहासनोपाश्रित-चारु-बाहु- रध्यास्त पीठं विहित-प्रणामः ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: (Vibhisapa) who had made (his) salutations and who rested his charming arm on the throne, sat on a seat fetched by servants conversant with (Ravana's) intention, causing the earlier visitors to shrink (back).

Verse 13

ततो दशाऽऽस्यः क्षुभिताऽहि-कल्पं दीप्राऽङ्गुलीयोपलमूढ-रत्नम् ।अनेक-चञ्चन्-नख-कान्ति-जिह्वं प्रसार्य पाणिं समितिं बभाषे ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Then, Ravana, having stretched out (his) palm that resembled an enraged cobra, the gem in the ring on which was

Verse 14

"शक्तैः सुहृद्भिः परिदृष्ट-कार्यै- राम्नातिभिर्नीतिषु बुद्धि-मद्भिः । युष्मद्-विधैः सार्धमुपाय-विद्भिः सध्यन्ति कार्याणि सु-मन्त्रितानि ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: ‘‘Undertakings which are well deliberated with capable and intelligent friends like you, who have seen action, studied political sciences and are conversant with the (four-fold) remedies, (are bound to) succeed.

Verse 15

उपेक्षिते वालि-खराऽऽदि-नाशे दग्धे पुरेऽक्षे निहते स-भृत्ये । सैन्ये द्विषां सागरमुत्तितीर्षा- व-नन्तरं ब्रूत यदत्र युक्तम्।" ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: ‘‘The destruction of Vali, Khara and others having been disregarded, the city being burnt, Aksa being killed along with his attendants and the army of the enemy being desirous of crossing the ocean, say what should be done here (under such circumstances).

Verse 16

भुजांऽस-वक्षः-स्थल-कार्मुकाऽसीन्गदाश्च शूलानि च यातुधानाः । परामृशन्तः प्रथिताऽभिमानाः प्रोचुः प्रहस्त-प्रमुखा दशाऽऽस्यम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: (Respectfully) touching (their) arms,shoulders,broad chests, bows, swords, maces and spikes, the demons , whose pride was well known and whose chief was Prahasta, said to Ravana :

Verse 17

"अ-खण्ड्य-मानं परिखण्ड्य शक्रं त्वं पण्डितं-मन्यमुदीर्ण-दण्डः । नराऽऽभियोगं नृ-भुजां प्रधान ! मन्त्रोन्मुखः किं नयसे गुरुत्वम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Oh Chief of cannibals ! Having totally broken down Indra whose pride was industructible and who vainly regarded himself intelligent, why do you, whose might is enhanced and who are inclined to (take) counsel, raise to importance the conflict with a man ?

Verse 18

निर्यत्-स्फुलिङ्गाऽऽकुल-धूम-राशिं किं ब्रूहि भूमौ पिनषाम भानुम् ।आ दन्त-निष्पीडित-पीतमिन्दुं ष्ठीवाम शुष्केक्षु-लताऽस्थि-कल्पम् ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Say, shall we powder on the ground the sun from whom will shoot out a mass of smoke mingled with spark ? Ah ! or shall we spit out, like dry bagasse of sugarcane the moon sucked up, after being completely squeezed with our teeth ?

Verse 19

स-राघवैः किं बत वानरैस्तैर्यैः प्रातराशोऽपि न कस्यचिन्नः । स-स्थाणु-कैलास-धारऽभिधत्स्व किं द्यौरधोऽस्तु क्षितिरन्तरीक्षे ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Alas, what with those monkeys (coming here), along with the two Raghu princes with whom even the breakfast of any one of us (will not be provided for) ? Oh holder of the Kailasa together with Siva, say, if the heaven should be placed) underneath and the earth up in the sky !

Verse 20

चापल्य-युक्तस्य हरेः कृशानुः समेधितो वालधि-भाक्त्वदीयैः । शस्त्रेण वध्यस्य गलन्नधाक्षीद्राजन् ! प्रमादेन निजेन लङ्काम्।" ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Oh King, (it was only) the fire enkindled by your own (men) and resting (burning) on the tail of the monkey which was full of rashness and deserved to be killed with a weapon , falling off, that burnt down Lanka --(all) through (our) own mistake."
