भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 21

आसिष्ट नैकत्र शुचा व्यरंसीत्कृताऽकृतेभ्यः क्षिति-पाल-भाग्-भ्यः । स चन्दनोशीर-मृणाल-दिग्धः शोका-ग्निनाऽगाद्द्यु-निवास-भूयम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: He would not sit at one place, and through grief, (he) became indifferent to the royal tasks, whether done or undone; (though) anointed with sandalkhus and lotusstalk (juice), he passed away into the state of the heaven-dwellers.

Verse 22

विचुक्रुशुर्भूमि-पतेर्महिष्यः केशांल्लुलुञ्चुः स्व-वपूंषि जघ्नुः । विभूषणान्युन्मुमुचुः क्षमाया पेतुर्बभञ्जुर्वलयानि चैव ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: The Queens of the king wailed aloud, tore off (their) hair, struck (their) bodies, pulled off (their) ornaments, fell on the ground and even broke their bracelets.

Verse 23

ताः सान्त्वयन्ती भरत-प्रतीक्षा तं बन्धु-ता न्यक्षिपदाशु तैले । दूतांश्च राजाऽऽत्मजमानिनीषून्प्रास्थापयन्मन्त्रि-मतेन यूनः ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Consoling them and waiting for Bharata, the kinsmen hastily placed him (Dasaratha) in oil and, desirous of fetching the son of the Kingdespatched, with the consent of the ministers, young messengers.

Verse 24

"सुप्तो नभस्तः पतितं निरीक्षां- चक्रे विवस्वन्तमधः स्फुरन्तम्" ।आख्यद्वसन्मातृ-कुले सखिभ्यः पश्यन्प्रमादं भरतोऽपि राज्ञः ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Living in his maternal abodeBharata also saw, ( while ) asleep, the sun fallen from the sky and shooting downwards; sensing danger to the King, he told (so) to his friends.

Verse 25

अशिश्रवन्नात्ययिकं तमेत्य दूता यदाऽर्थं प्रयियासयन्तः ।आंहिष्ट जाताऽञ्जिहिषस्तदाऽसा- वुत्कण्ठमानो भरतो गुरूणाम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: When, having arrived and desirous of making him start, the messengers did not communicate to him the disastrous fact, Bharata, in whom the desire to start was born, departed, anxiously remembering (bis) elders

Verse 26

बन्धूनशाङ्किष्ट समाकुलुत्वा- दासेदुषः स्नेह-वशादपायम् । गोमायु-सारङ्ग-गणाश्च सम्यङ्नाऽयासिषुर्भीममरासिषुश्च ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Being distressed on account of the influence of affection, he suspected his kinsmen to have fallen into calamity; herds of deer and jackals did not cross him auspiciously but yelled horridly.

Verse 27

स प्रोषिवानेत्य पुरं प्रवेक्ष्यन्शुश्राव घोषं न जनौघ-जन्यम् ।आकर्णयामास न वेद-नादान्न चोपलेभे वणिजां पणाऽयान् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Having reached (Ayodhya), he who had stayed away for long and (was nowentering the city, did not hear any commotion emanating from the streams of people. Nor did he hear the chanting of the Vedasand he did not perceive any profit to (or mutual enquiries amongst) the traders.

Verse 28

चक्रन्दुरुच्चैर्नृ-पतिं समेत्य तं मातरोऽभ्यर्णमुपागताऽस्राः । पुरोहिताऽमात्य-मुखाश्च योधा विवृद्ध-मन्यु-प्रतिपूर्ण-मन्या ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Having joined him who had sat down, the mothers and the warriors headed by the priests and ministers, to whom tears had come and whose veins in the nape had swollen through intensified grief, wept aloud for the King

Verse 29

दिदृक्षमाणः परितः स-सीतं रामं यदा नैक्षत लक्ष्मणं च । रोरुद्यमानः स तदाऽभ्यपृच्छद्यथावदाख्यन्नथ वृत्तमस्मै ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: When, desirous of seeing Rama along with Sita and Laksmana, he did not see them around, then, weeping incessantly he enquired of them ; thereupon they narrated to him the happening just) as it had taken place.

Verse 30

आबद्ध-भीम-भ्रुकुटी-विभङ्गः शेश्वीयमानाऽरुण-रौद्र-नेत्रः ।उच्चैरुपालब्ध स केकयीं च शोके मुहुश्चाविरतं न्यमाङ्क्षीत् ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: He, whose eyebrows were knit in a terrific frown and whose red and fierce eyes were extremely swollen, loudly abused Kekayi again and again, and plunged into continuous grief.
