भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 21

मया त्वमाप्थाः शरणं भयेषु वयं त्वयाऽप्याप्स्महि धर्म-वृद्ध्यै । क्षत्रं द्विज-त्वं च परस्पराऽर्थं शङ्कां कृथा मा प्रहिणु-स्व-सूनुम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: You have been approached by me as a protector in calamities; we also have been approached by you for the prosperity of Dharma. The Ksatriya race and the Brahmana raceare for each other. Do not enterain any fear. Send (your) son.

Verse 22

घानिष्यते तेन महान्विपक्षः स्थायिष्यते येन रणे पुरस्तात् । मा मां महाऽऽत्मन्परिभूर्-योग्ये न मद्-विधो न्यस्यति भारमग्र्यम् ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: By him, who will stand at the vanguard in the battlefield, (even a) great adversary will be killed. Oh high-souled one, do not disregard me. One like me does not lay the supreme burden upon an unworthy (person). "

Verse 23

क्रुध्यन्कुलं धक्ष्यति विप्र-वह्निर्यास्यन्सुतस्तप्स्यति मां स-मन्युम् ।इत्थं नृपः पूर्वमवालुलोचे ततोऽनुजज्ञे गमनं सुतस्य ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: ‘‘The raging fire in the form of the brahmin's will burn out my race. By going, (my) son will torment only my grief-striken self." Thus did the king reflect first and then permit the departure of his son.

Verse 24

आशीर्भिरभ्यर्च्य मुनिः क्षितीन्द्रं प्रीतः प्रतस्थे पुनराश्रमाय । तं पृष्ठ-तः प्रष्ठमियाय नम्रो हिंस्रेषु-दीप्ताऽऽप्त-धनुः कुमारः ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Having honoured the protector of the earth with blessings, the delighted sage again set forth for his hermitage .The humble prince having a trustworthy bow glowing with (sharp) killing arrows, followed him wholed in the front.

Verse 25

प्रयास्यतः पुण्य-वनाय जिष्णो- रामस्य रोचिष्णु-मुखस्य घृष्णुः । त्रै-मातुरः कृत्स्न-जिताऽस्त्र-शस्त्रः सध्र्यङ्रतः श्रेयसि लक्ष्मणोऽभूत् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Dedicated to (Rama's) well-being, the daring Laksmana, who had three mothers and had acquired all the missiles and weapons, became the fellowtraveller of the victorious Rama who had a beaming face and had set out for the holy forest.

Verse 26

इषु-मति रघु-सिंहे दन्दशूकाञ्जिघांसौ धनुररिभिर-सह्यं मुष्टि-पीडं दधाने । व्रजति पुर-तरुण्यो बद्ध-चित्राऽङ्गुलित्रे कथमपि गुरु-शोकान्मा रुदन्माङ्गलिक्यः ॥

Metre: मालिनी

Karandikar: As Rama, who had put on a wonderful finger-guard and was holding tightly in his fist his bow with arrows intent on killing harmful demons and unbearable to the enemies, was leaving, the auspicious young ladies of the city, somehow, avoided weeping though their grief was heavy.

Verse 27

अथ जगदुरनीचै-राशिषस्तस्य विप्रास्तुमुल-कल-निनादं तूर्यमाजघ्नुरन्ये ।अभिमत-फल-शंसी चारु पुस्फोर बाहुस्तरुषु चुकुवुरुच्चैः पक्षिणश्चाऽनुकूलाः ॥

Metre: मालिनी

Karandikar: The brahmins loudly proclaimed blessings on him ; others (trumpeteers) played on their instruments loud sweet notes; his (right) arm throbbed foretelling the desired results; and , birds chirped loudly from the trees in an auspicious manner.

Verse 1

वनस्पतीनां सरसां नदीनां तेजस्विनां कान्तिभृतां दिशां च । निर्याय तस्याः स पुरः समन्ता च्छ्रियं दधानां शरदं ददर्श ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Having come out of the city, he (Rama) perceived the autumn bearing, all around, the beauty of plants, lakes, and rivers, and the radiant quarters possessing splendour.

Verse 2

तरङ्ग-सङ्गाच्चपलैः पलाशैर्ज्वाला-श्रियं साऽतिशयां दधन्ति । स-धूम-दीप्ताऽग्नि-रुचीनि रेजुस्ताम्रोत्पलान्याकुल-षट्-पदानि ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Wearing the excessive splendour of filames on their petals (that were) tremulous on account of the contact with the ripples, the red lotuses, which had the hue of smoky blazing fire and had bees hovering (around), looked to advantage.

Verse 3

बिम्बाऽऽगतैस्तीर-वनैः समृद्धिं निजां विलोक्याऽपहृतां पयोभिः । कूलानि साऽऽमर्षतयेव तेनुः सरोज-लक्ष्मीं स्थल-पद्म-हासैः ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: On seeing their own affiluence snatched away by the waters through the clusters of trees on the banks that had entered (the waters) as reflections, the banks, as if through wrath, exhibited the splendour of the water-lilies by means of the blooms of ground-lilies.
