भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 1

निवृत्ते भरते धी-मानत्रे रामस्तपो-वनम् । प्रपेदे पूजितस्तस्मिन्दण्डकारण्यमीयिवान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: When Bharata had gone back, the wise Rama repaired to the penance-grove of Atri. (After having been) honoured there, he went to the Dandaka forest.

Verse 2

अटाट्यमानोऽरण्यानीं स-सीतः सह-लक्ष्मणः । बलाद्बुभुक्षुणोत्क्षिप्य जह्रे भीमेन रक्षसा ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Wandering extensively through that vast forest, along with Sita and Laksmana, Rama, having been picked up, was carried away by a ferocious hungry demon.

Verse 3

अवाक्-शिरसमुत्-पादं कृतान्तेनाऽपि दुर्-दमम् । भङ्क्त्वा भुजौ विराधाऽऽख्यं तं तौ भुवि निचख्नतुः ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having broken his arms, the two (Rama and Laksmana) buried in the ground, that (demon), whose name was Viradha, whose head was downwards and feet lifted up, and who was difficult to be subdued even by the God of Death (Yama).

Verse 4

आंहिषातां रघु-व्याघ्रौ शरभङ्गाऽऽश्रमं ततः ।अध्यासितं श्रिया ब्राह्म्या शरण्यं शरणैषिणाम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Thereafter, the two best of Raghus proceeded to the hermitage of Sarabhaiga, which was the abode of Vedic (i.e., spiritual) glory and the refuge for those who desired shelter.

Verse 5

पुरो रामस्य जुहवाञ्चकार ज्वलने वपुः । शरभङ्गः प्रदिश्याऽऽरात्सुतीक्ष्ण-मुनिः-केतनम् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Having pointed out the nearby resort of sage Sutikspa, Sarabhaiga, sacrificed his body in fire, in the presence of Rama.

Verse 6

"यूयं समैष्यथेत्यस्मि न्नासिष्महि वयं वने । दृष्टाः स्थ स्वस्ति वो यामः स्व-पुण्य-विजितां गतिम्" ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: (At the time of sacrificing himself, Sarabhanga said to Rama) : ‘‘We resided in this forest (expecting) that you would arrive; (now) you have been seen; farewell to you ; we depart to the status earned by our own religious merit."

Verse 7

तस्मिन्कृशानु-साद्-भूते सुतीक्ष्ण-मुनि-सन्निधौ ।उवास पर्ण-शालायां भ्रमन्ननिशमाऽऽश्रमान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: When the (sage Sarabhaiga) had been reduced to ashes by fire, (Rama) lived day and night in a cottage of leaves in the neighbourhood of sage Sutiksna.

Verse 8

वनेषु वासतेयेषु निवसन्पर्ण-संस्तरः । शय्योत्थायं मृगान्विध्यन्नातिथेयो विचक्रमे ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Residing in habitable forests, that hospitable (Rama) having a bed of leaves, after getting out of the bed wandered about shooting wild beasts.

Verse 9

ऋग्-यजुषमधीयानान्सामान्यांश्च समर्चयन् । बुभुजे देव-सात्-कृत्वा शूल्यमुख्यं च हेम-वान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Paying homage to sages that were reciting *ks and yajes and those who were experts in the samans, Rama performing (daily) sacrifices, ate after offering to the Gods meat cooked on a spit and in a pan.

Verse 10

वसानस्तन्त्रक-निभे सर्वाङ्गीणे तरु-त्वचौ । काण्डीरः खाड्गकः शार्ङ्गी रक्षन्विप्रांस्तनुत्र-वान् ॥

Metre: अनुष्टुप्

Karandikar: Wearing a pair of bark-garments that resembled new unbleached pieces of cloth and which covered the whole body, wielding a sword, bow and arrows, wearing an armour and protecting the brahmins,
