भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधः)

Verse 11

लताऽनुपातं कुसुमान्यगृह्णात्स नद्यवस्कन्दमुपास्पृशच्च । कुतूहलाच्चारु-शिलोपवेशं काकुत्स्थ ईषत्स्मयमान आस्त ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Bending before every creeper, he plucked flowers, and leaping up to every river he sipped (water) ; (indeed) that descendant of Kakutstha (Rama) sat down on every charming stone slab, smiling slightly

Verse 12

तिग्मांशु-रश्मिच्-छुरितान्य-दूरात्प्राञ्चि प्रभाते सलिलान्यपश्यत् । गभस्ति-धाराभिरिव द्रुतानि तेजांसि भानोर्भुवि संभृतानि ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: He sawnot from far, the eastern waters tinted in the morning by the rays of the sun, as if (they were) the lustre squeezed from the sunbeams and collected on the earth

Verse 13

दिग्-व्यापिनीर्लोचन-लोभनीया मृजाऽन्वयाः स्नेहमिव स्रवन्तीः । ऋज्वाऽऽयताः शस्य-विशेष-पङ्क्तीस्तुतोष पश्यन्वितृणाऽन्तरालाः ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: He was pleased to see the straight long rows of special corn, attractive to the eyes, pervading the quarters, cleanly planted, with its interstices cleared of grass and as if it were oozing out oiliness (love).

Verse 14

वियोग-दुःखाऽनुभवाऽनभिज्ञैः काले नृपांऽशं विहितं ददद्भिः ।आहार्य-शोभा-रहितैरमायै- रैक्षिष्ट पुम्भिः प्रचितान्स गोष्ठान् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: He saw colonies of cowherds occupied by men who were not acquainted with the experience of the grief of separation, who paid the prescribed royal portion (taxes) in time, who were devoid of artificial embellishments and who were free from deceit,

Verse 15

स्त्री-भूषणं चेष्टितम-प्रगल्भं चारूण्य-वक्राण्यपि वीक्षितानि । ऋजूंश्च विश्वास-कृतः स्वभावान्गोपाऽङ्गनानां मुमुदे विलोक्य ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: He was delighted to observe the innocent activity (that constituted) the ornament of womanhood, the charming though not athwart glances , and the straightforward , confidence-inspiring nature of the cowherdesses.

Verse 16

विवृत्त-पार्श्वं रुचिराऽङ्गहारं समुद्वहच्-चारु-नितम्ब-रम्यम् ।आमन्द्र-मन्थ-ध्वनि-दत्त-तालं गोपाऽङ्गना-नृत्यमनन्दयत्तम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: The dance of the milk-maids in which (their) sides were twisted and the body made charming movements which were attractive with the beautiful tossing buttocks and in which the rhythmic beat was marked by the slightly low sound of churning, delighted him.

Verse 17

विचित्रमुच्चैः प्लवमानमारात्कुतूहलं त्रस्नु ततान तस्य । मेघाऽत्ययोपात्त-वनोपशोभं कदम्बकं वातमजं मृगाणाम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Jumping high up from far and proceeding windwards, a flock of timid spotted deer that had reached the forest and acquired charm on the departure of the clouds, stretched his curiosity.

Verse 18

सिताऽरविन्द-प्रचयेषु च लीनाः संसक्त-पेणेषु च सैकतेषु । कुन्दाऽवदाताः कलहंस-मालाः प्रतीयीरे श्रोत्र-सुखैर्निनादैः ॥

Metre: इन्द्रवज्रा

Karandikar: Lurking in the thick beds of white lotuses and the foam-covered sandy banks, the rows of royal swans (kalahasas), white like jasmine flowers, were detected only from their notes, delightful to the ear.

Verse 19

न तज्जलं यन्न सु-चारु-पङ्कजं न पङ्कजं तद्यद-लीन-षट्-पदम् । न षट्-पदोऽसौ न जुगुञ्ज यः कलं; न गुञ्जितं तन्न जहार यन्मनः ॥

Metre: वंशस्थम्

Karandikar: (There was no water that did not have very beautiful lotuses, no lotusus that had no bee resting within, no bee that did not hum sweetly and no humming that did not captivate the mind.

Verse 20

तं यायजूकाः सह भिक्षु-मुख्यैस्तपः-कृशाः शान्त्युदकुम्भ-हस्ताः । यायावराः पुष्प-फलेन चाऽन्ये प्राणर्चुरर्च्या जगदर्चनीयम् ॥

Metre: उपजातिः

Karandikar: Habitual sacrificers, emaciated by penance and (carrying) jugs of propitiatory water in their hands, vagrant mendicants and others fit to be worshipped, paid homage, with flowers and fruits, to him (Rama) who was worth being worshipped by the the world.
