Mahadev, Maya, and Time: The Profound Secret of Shiva-Tattva

Maya—that which is not real yet appears real—is called illusion. It conceals the true nature of the Ātman (soul); hence, it is referred to as Tamas (darkness). Since knowledge (Vidya) dispels it, it is also known as Avidya (ignorance). It is the cause of delusion (Moha) and lack of discernment (Aviveka), which is why it is sometimes simply called Moha.

The scriptures describe it as Asat (non-existent) because it is neither real (Sat) nor truly existent. Yet, as it serves as the cause of the illusory play of creation (Kārya-Prapañcha), it is termed the Karana (cause). It is never directly manifest; rather, it is only inferred through its effects, which is why it is called Avyakta (unmanifest). However, it is not an independent reality—it is the Shakti (power) of Mahadev, always under his command.

The relationship between the Supreme Shiva and Maya is what is known as Parama Kāla (the Supreme Time), within whose bounds all beings exist. This relationship itself is an eternal concept (Anādi-Kalpana), where all things merge into time, but time itself never dissolves.

The dissolution of Kāla (time), Māyā (illusion), and all their effects is possible only through the realization of Shiva-Tattva (the principle of Shiva). Just as time is not limited by itself, Mahadev too is not bound by time. However, the distinction is that time itself can be overcome, whereas Shiva, being the very nature of truth, is never obstructed, never dissolves, and remains eternal.

🌿 “That which has arisen, perished, and will arise again—Shiva, who transcends time, is the cause of it all.” 🌿

It is only by Shiva’s grace that Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, and all other deities hold their positions and perform their duties. The Vedas declare that the entire cosmos is under Shiva’s dominion. Countless Brahmas, Vishnus, Rudras, and Indras have perished over time, yet Mahadev alone remains eternal.
