So Hum
So Hum is a Sanskrit mantra meaning "I am That" or "I am He/Divine." It represents the realization of one's identity with ultimate reality—the recognition that individual consciousness (Atman) is not separate from universal consciousness (Brahman).
This mantra is particularly powerful because it naturally aligns with the breath: "So" on inhalation, "Hum" on exhalation. This makes it ideal for meditation, as the breath provides continuous support for the practice. Some teachers reverse it to "Ham" (inhale) and "Sa" (exhale), meaning "I am" and "That."
The practice involves simply noticing the breath and silently repeating the mantra in rhythm with breathing. This creates a continuous loop of remembrance—each breath becomes an affirmation of one's essential nature beyond the limited ego-identity.
Over time, the mantra may drop away, leaving only awareness of breathing, then awareness of awareness itself. The practice demonstrates non-duality experientially: the boundary between self and other, inside and outside, dissolves in the simple fact of breathing—which is neither entirely voluntary nor involuntary, neither entirely self nor not-self.
So Hum points toward the ultimate truth: consciousness observing itself, being itself, in the eternal now.
