The Serenity Prayer

Wisdom to know the difference

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, the Serenity Prayer has become one of the most widely used prayers across spiritual traditions and recovery programs. Its wisdom parallels Stoic philosophy's dichotomy of control while framing it in theistic terms.

The prayer addresses a fundamental human struggle: distinguishing between what requires acceptance and what demands action. Premature acceptance becomes resignation; misplaced effort to change the unchangeable causes frustration. Wisdom lies in discernment.

"Serenity" suggests peace arising from acceptance, not passive indifference but active alignment with reality. "Courage" acknowledges that changing what can be changed often requires bravery—to admit fault, establish boundaries, pursue growth despite uncertainty.

The prayer's power comes from its brevity and focus. It doesn't request different circumstances but transformation of consciousness—the ability to relate wisely to whatever circumstances arise.

Adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and countless individuals, the prayer offers a framework for navigating life's inevitable mixture of controllable and uncontrollable elements, applicable regardless of specific religious commitment.
