The Śiva Sūtra (शिवसूत्र) is one of the most important texts of Kashmir Śaivism, a non-dual philosophical tradition that recognizes Śiva as the ultimate reality and consciousness itself. According to tradition, these 77 aphorisms were revealed to the sage Vasugupta in a dream, inscribed on a rock at Mahādeva mountain in Kashmir.
The sūtras are divided into three sections called unmeṣa (awakenings):
- Śāmbhavopāya (Divine Means) - Direct recognition of one's nature as Śiva
- Śāktopāya (Energy Means) - Meditative practices using mental focus
- Āṇavopāya (Individual Means) - Practices using body, breath, and mantra
